Donna Dodson and The Seagull Cinderella Controversy
Show Notes:
Episode Notes:
To paraphrase artist Donna Dodson, Art is a dialog between artist and audience. And, with public art, that dialog sometimes spills into topics beyond what the artist may have intended.
Her sculpture, Seagull Cinderella, blew up on social media after someone took offense to the fact that their child noticed and proclaimed, "look dad, a duck with boobs."
The 8' tall sculpture became a touch stone for artists to talk about censorship, a foil for opposing views and grist for a ton of reporters.
Why was it such a controversy? And why is it still roiling today? And, what is public art for anyway?
Join Donna and I as we explore the incident in New Bedford and the outcome. And, come to your own conclusions. But, share in the dialogue.

The Inspiration for Cherry Bomb! The Podcast
After creating Cherry Bomb! and the rest of the Sweet Blasts series of photos, Matt found that every time he showed the works, deep conversations were sparked between him and his viewers as well as between the viewers themselves.
The podcast was the natural next step to continuing the conversation and sharing it with a wider audience.
