Green gold from the sun kissed country of Mexico.
Loved by chefs and foodies, thrown into everything from avocado toast to guacamole, the humble avocado has become a super food, making it a very lucrative product in the marketplace.
Which triggers greed, cut throat behavior and murder.
Everything has consequences.
Sweet Blasts is an exploration of my apprehension about what we are doing to our food supply. Whether through neglect or short sightedness, we are all too often jeopardizing our future with the choices we make to bring food to our tables.
These images are designed to spark a conversation and help us to be more aware of where we get our next meal.
All of the Sweet Blasts have a pretty personal reason behind them.
This one is a reminder to myself to be mindful.
Yes, donuts are tasty (most of them, anyway) and are a wonderful treat.
But, I constantly have to remind myself that the definition of a treat is “an especially unexpected source of joy, delight or amusement.”
Which means to me: Eating one every day is, by definition, no longer unexpected.

One of the first of the Sweet Blasts series, Lemon Delight! was born after seeing an ad for dish soap and a PSA about left over military ordinance. The two visions kind of combined in my back brain somewhere.
The next day found me perusing the produce section for the ultimate lemon.

Did you ever split the seed in half, stick them on your nose and pretend to be a rhinoceros? Yeah, me neither…

Tools, especially vintage tools, tell a particular story.
Based on the technology available at the time of manufacturing, the patina that describes how they were handled. Each nick and scrape, every little customization that the wielder added, unwinds a tale of the tool bag, box or bench that was the tool’s home.
What rich story do these wrenches mumble to themselves?
I met a guy who collected tools. A kindred spirit!
His goal was to find all the tools that went with a particular transportation device.
This particular set was created for the Indian Motorcycle Company, the competition for Harley-Davidson.

During the height of the late lock down, I searched the studio for something that spoke to me.
A bright light caught my eye. It was a beam of sunlight, through the window, striking a glass bulb, that had been placed on the old shelf.
It had probably been sitting there for a few years, just waiting to be noticed. Pulled from active duty after lighting up my sets for years (?), it had finally suffered a catastrophic failure.
It probably made an incredibly bright light before popping with a sizzle.
And, there it was, sitting there among the dusty books, just waiting for the final shuffle to the bin.
The tales it could tell, if it could talk, of the people, and things, it had rained its light upon.
Or, perhaps, one more time to the set?

Nailed It! came to me in a dream.
It was a variation of the old Bugs Bunny cartoon where Elmer Fudd stuck his shotgun in Bug’s hole in the ground and came out of a knot in a tree behind him. Every time he poked it in, it stuck out further.
So, in my dream, every time I hit the nail, it stuck in a little further from the edge of the frame. Eventually, it it is going to stick into the hammer, don’t you think?
Weird how that works, eh?
A vintage flatlay collection of machinists' chuck keys.
Several of which are now missing, immediately after creating this image.
If you know, you know.
You know?
The old typewriter mocks me.
It sits there, my scribbled notes, more crossed out sentences and arrows drawn between paragraphs and over pages, laying impotently on the desk beside it.
And, the thin, crisp typewriter paper rolled around the carriage roller now covered with dabs of white correction fluid.
Stereotypical balls of discarded attempts pepper the floor around the trash can in the corner. (Some strange law of the universe keeps these balls of symbolic frustration from ever actually entering the can, no matter how accurate the throw.)
“Let’s start a fresh sheet.”
The clock in the living room dings once, marking 1 am.
My father sighs and rubs his tired, red eyes.
I’ll never get this stupid book report done.

As I lay in the hammock, under the old tree, a pair of squirrels skitter past, chasing each other up the bark on the far side, away from me.
Quiet breeze ruffles leaves above (skitter, scratch, pause, scratch, chitter, longer pause).
Eyes drowse closed against the scattered, dappled, sunlight (skitter, pause, skitter, from the other tree now).
Something thwacks lightly across my nose and touches my cheek and lips, causing me to levitate out of the hammock, with a manly squeak.
A whirleygig seed has spun down, knocked free from the arboreal antics and landed on my face.
One of the squirrels hesitates and looks down at me. I swear it is laughing at me.
The games continue as I lay back, struggling to regain my calm.
The Driver drives the clever screw, which is, in turn, driving the driver of the Driver to twist ever harder.
Until, with a fateful twist of the wrist, the Driver tip slips, gently grinding the slots atop the screw to a smooth divot.
Evidence of the evolution of early screw turners is fairly scant, only hinted at by the evidence of old screws (presumably with the aforementioned rough ground divots).
Some theorized that the evidences supports the following answer to the question, “which came first, the screw or the driver?”
Obviously, it was the screw.
Smash! is an ode to one of the first tool concepts that our species developed: hit something with something else, until it takes on the shape/texture/consistency that you want.
Yes, what later became known as “The Hammer” (and what was, in earlier times, allegedly, just a nicely shaped piece of rock, found on walk-about), was a handy, versatile multi-tool for the average hominid about town. Somewhere, about 32,000 years ago, someone attached a handle.
And, we have been customizing and specificizing it ever since.
Hearsay is that this collection is related to the cobbler industry.

“Art describes concepts more concisely than the written word. An art collection is, in its purest form, a reflection of how you see the world.”

It’s all about the clover. And, there is a four leaf clover hidden in this limited edition photography.
So, you won the genetic lottery. You just pulled the winning card. You just missed the accident. You got lucky. Of course, luck is most likely an illusion caused by the complexity of variables that rolled into being some time before the Big Bang. Genetics, and other stuff, is the way it is because of physics so complex that it would require a simulation the size of, well, the universe, to calculate. Wait a minute…

These are not images of a camp fire, or a stove burner. These are images, simply, of fire.
These images were created in an environment that removes outside influences and extraneous details, leaving the fire ball as the center of interest.

Sugar Crash! Sugar Rush! Sugar makes the world go round. A spoonful of sugar… aw, you probably know the rest.
We have had an interesting history with the sweet, high energy nectar of the gods. And, it ain’t all good!
We started out, on the ancestral plains, searching for high energy foods to sustain us.
In a short (relatively speaking) time, we went from a scarcity mindset to an overabundance. Yet, we are unable to change our instinctual craving.
From one point of the sugar trade triangle to high fructose in everything!
This image is my reminder that there can be too much of a good thing.
Be mindful.
